Rated 92 Pts Robert Parker. Cape d'Estaing is Kangaroo Island's most awarded vineyard.
Every vintage of every Cape d'Estaing wine have been rated between 90-96 by Robert Parker for 8 years.
Cape d'Estaing is based 3km from the North Coast on Kangaroo Island. The owners firmly believe that low yields produce the best wines. They are very careful to slow the growth of the vine between flowering/fruit set and veraison. This produces desirably small berries with very high skin area to juice ratio.
Spring was mild and dry, following a very dry winter in 2002. Fruit set was good. Summer was mild and dry too, except for one short period of rain in February which caused a small amount of splitting. The fruit soon dried out and ripened quickly to just under 14 Baume. The Shiraz was harvested on March 10 and 11.
A combination of new and once-used American and European hogsheads was used.

Colour

Quite a deep, bright red with some development now starting to show up.

Nose
|
This has a lovely combination of lifted plummy fruit with some gently charry oak. Complex.

Palate
|
The palate is growing all the time and is rich and lingering. The berries are still there, tannins are quite firm, although now starting to round off, and the oak is sweet and pleasant.

Potential
|
In keeping with many 2004 wines, this is on the elegant side of 'full-bodied'. It will continue to become softer and more compelx with time and will well repay cellaring. Peak about 2010 - 2011.
