A group of friends with over a 100 years combined experience in the wine industry came together in 2002 and created Poverty Hill Wines. Led by award winning winemaker Colin Forbes, these wines exhibit classic Eden Valley characters.
The combination of vineyard altitude and the influence of 'old vines' makes the wines from this area, both powerfully fruity and with excellent cellaring potential.
The two vineyards that supply the fruit for Poverty Hill Wines are at Springton, in the famous Eden Valley Region.
The Eden Valley area is a neighbour of the Barossa Valley, but is higher, and therefore, cooler. Grapes are therefore much slower to ripen, consequently developing more complex, subtle characters than those from the Barossa. Like much of Australia the soils of the Eden Valley are geologically very old, being a skeletal Podsolic type, and thus not containing the 'flood plain' high vigour style seen elsewhere. |
